The Thrill

Cigarette ashes and head-on heart crashes
I feel like I’ve fled the scene
She writes hit singles on frosted car windows
As I lie stretched out on the street
She shouts that she’s angry
They don’t understand me
It’s always been this way
They say that she’s ill
She did it for the thrill
Just wondered what people would say
I know that we should be happy
But sometimes these days
Just eat me away
And sometimes I sink like a stone
I’m tired of last chances
These fallen romances
Are crowding me out of the room

Smoker's Cough

I feel the drink is wearing off
And Sarah’s got a smoker’s cough
She likes to roll her own
When we lie wasted under stars
A cavalcade of vodka shots
Had knocked us down into the mosh-pit
There like fallen angels
We collided with the bar
She smiles like a child and says
Lift me up onto the stage
And we watch Sarah fall
Down to the floor
A hundred hands
Strobe lights and trance
We watched a man with empty eyes
He stares at Sarah mesmerised
She doesn’t seem to notice
That he’s laughing at the sky
Sarah’s brought a dove she takes
Between the tents and muddy lakes
Its getting hard to answer
All the questions on her mind
She smiles like a child and says
Lift me up onto the stage
And we watch Sarah fall
Down to the floor
A hundred hands
Strobe lights and trance
I feel the drink is wearing off
And Sarah’s got a smoker’s cough
She likes to roll her own
When we lie wasted under stars

What Your Letter Said

Mark thinks John’s girlfriend is hot
Though he pretends he does not
His light conversation disguises frustration
Whilst inside he wants her so much
His mind and his body conspire
He cannot contain his desire
and bends situations, until the temptation
becomes too much to endure
I don’t know what you want me to say
I feel crazy about it get out of my way
And I just want to tell you there’s nothing, okay?
there in my head I won’t forget
Don’t give a damn what your letter said
Yes, here, here in my head, I won’t forget
Don’t give a damn what your letter said

Robotic Wife

It was just after nine, took a bottle of wine
Sat out on the steps wait until it arrives
She came in a box, sellotape - ripped it off
She was shiny and new and convection air cooled
I like her circuits and lights, I love my robotic wife
She's very attentive and she gives good advice

Put together with tools, and instruction manuals
She could do anything that I asked her to do
Her education advanced, we took a roadtrip to France
We swam in the lakes, and danced under stars
But she wasn't waterproof
And so the lake seeped through
Moisture got on her contacts
Fried her CPU - She went totally crazy!

Fine By Spring

She's says she's happy, we know that she's not
We found her this morning
They don't think she meant it, she simply forgot,
To turn out the lights and
She tells us that we don't know how she feels
A bottle of vodka, more hospital bills
And she says, see there I told you,
Look I will be fine soon
I swear I'll be fine by spring.
Take her back home and she lies in her bed
shouting at the TV
They tell us please don't mind what she says
She's not quite herself and
She tells us that we don't know how she feels
Twelve shots of whiskey, a bottle of pills
And she says, see there I told you,
I swear I will be fine soon
I will be fine by spring
She stands and throws chairs
Screams, don't you dare leave me
I'm scared and I'm tired
Of being your tragedy
She no longer says we don't know how she feels
She just sits in silence and stares at the walls
And her eyes say there I told you,
I swear I will be fine soon
I will be fine by spring

Last Cigarette

His last cigarette slips from his hands
And crumbles on the floor
He says, I’m sorry but I’ve got to go to bed
Though you’ve spent all night explaining
Why we shouldn’t be together
I don’t believe a single word
You’ve ever said
Though your speech was well recited
Neatly phrased, can’t criticise it
I wish I could have heard what’s in your head
Though you once seemed so excited that
We should have found each other
Now I often wish we never ever had
I hope in your world this seems cool
Did victory ever taste so cruel?
Thought you were the one
Thought you were it
Thought you were cool
But you’re a bitch
Every time I think I need someone
You remind me just how
It all slips away somehow

Break Up Song

The first rehearsal went so well
John brought himself a bass guitar
Learned all Nirvana’s greatest hits
We felt so cool
Then John made his first big mistake
Decided to incorporate
French horns and a kazoo
Into the mix
The next day John came up to me
And said “I think that you’ll agree,
You know the band you liked so much?
We’re breaking up"
Oh I don’t know why
I still cannot see
Why bands are always breaking up on me

Back East

She says come outside, I think we need to talk
You're cruel and you're angry and I'm not the sort
Who thinks love conquers all, and after this fall
I think I'll be keeping my feet on the floor
Sometimes it seems you're still living back east
Take a plane ride, it'll be alright
We all like to believe, god there's someone for me
Help me take a stand, for the second round
Come a little closer now
Kiss me and leave
Just like it's always been
A voice tells me Catherine loves to be free
So I'll just let her be
We go back inside and put on our best
Impressions of calm and cool nonchalance
And I uncrease a smile and wear it a while
To fend off the punches she lands on my chest
Sometimes it seems you're still living back east
Take a plane ride, it'll be alright
We all like to believe that there's someone for me
Help me take a stand, for the second round
Come a little closer now
Kiss me and leave
Just like it's always been
A voice tells me Catherine loves to be free
So I'll just let her be
It's all coming back to me now
It's all coming back to me now
